Before we wrote any code, we spent months discussing the role of creativity, data collection and monetization in our company. We talked about the unnatural incentives in the technology industry to surveil and sell data; we discussed growth-at-all-costs business models and what that implies for monetization. We asked artists what they wanted and needed. Here are our beliefs.
Artists and fans control their personal data
We will respect your privacy on our services, giving you controls to manage your personal data and how it is used in the experience
You aren’t the product
We will not use surveillance of your personal data to sell advertising on our services. We will not require artists to favor majr over competing services. We will be transparent about promotion and marketing and always do our best to apply logic consistently and objectively.
No Digital Payola
We will not take positions of genre, culture or politics that unreasonably preference ranking or recommendation of creatives. We will share details on how our systems choose recommendations and take feedback on how to improve.
Choice
For creatives, subject to fan consent, we will provide as much direct fan community and commerce as possible. We will work to always provide the choice to opt-out to notifications and newsletters.
Own mistakes
Data isn’t bad - it’s how transparently and reasonably it's used. Many in tech have recklessly collected, surveilled and resold data without consideration to the consequences. We'll do our best, knowing mistakes will be made and we'll own them in the hopes of learning together.
